PROJECT BIO
This project involved the complete reconfiguration and extension of an existing family home to create a more functional, spacious, and future-proofed environment tailored to the evolving needs of the client’s growing family. Architecture North Ltd was appointed to design and oversee a two-storey rear extension, using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) timber construction to achieve high thermal performance, airtightness, and construction efficiency.
The design sought to unlock the full potential of the home by improving internal circulation, optimising underused areas, and introducing new, purposeful spaces. At ground floor level, the extension enabled the creation of a much larger and more connected kitchen and dining area, now offering generous views of, and direct access to, the rear garden. This new layout encourages natural light deep into the plan and supports family life with an open, welcoming space ideal for socialising, cooking, and everyday routines.
The former WC, awkwardly located in a conservatory, was relocated inside the original footprint of the building to improve access, comfort, and privacy. A portion of the existing oversized lounge was strategically reconfigured to incorporate a utility room, a new WC, and direct access to the garden. This reorganisation also created a transitional buffer space that now functions as a practical internal link between the main house and the adjoining garage, enhancing both usability and spatial coherence.
On the first floor, the additional floor area was used to create a spacious new master bedroom with a private en-suite, providing the parents with a calm, self-contained retreat. The family bathroom was redesigned to improve usability and better serve the remaining bedrooms, which were freed up to accommodate guests, children, or home working as required.
“We offer a complete range of services to support you through every stage of your project.”
The result is a well-balanced, contemporary family home that integrates architectural clarity, thoughtful planning, and practical detail. Through careful coordination of architecture, materials, and construction methods, Architecture North Ltd delivered a home that not only meets present-day needs but also offers long-term flexibility and comfort.
