Architecture North Ltd was appointed to design a single-storey rear extension that would significantly improve the everyday functionality and social potential of this suburban home. The client approached us with clear frustrations around the limitations of their existing layout—particularly the confined kitchen and dining areas, which made hosting guests and day-to-day use challenging.

The brief was to reimagine this part of the home as a generous, light-filled space where the client could comfortably entertain, cook, and gather with friends and family. The design response extended the rear of the property to create a seamless kitchen and dining environment, prioritising both practicality and comfort.

A carefully considered internal layout was developed to support the client's needs. This included a single, streamlined bank of kitchen units paired with a spacious central island, serving as both a functional workspace and an informal breakfast bar. A separate utility and pantry area was incorporated to keep the main space clutter-free and efficient, enhancing day-to-day usability without compromising on aesthetics.

To bring natural light deep into the new space, a series of skylights were strategically positioned across the flat roof. These, combined with large glazed openings to the rear garden, help create an open and airy atmosphere that shifts beautifully throughout the day.

Material selections and finishes were coordinated in collaboration with the client to ensure the new extension felt like a natural continuation of the home while providing a fresh, modern update. The result is a highly functional, elegant, and sociable environment that has transformed how the client experiences their home, allowing them to enjoy both everyday living and entertaining with ease.
