PROJECT BIO

Architecture North Ltd was appointed to design a single-storey front extension for this private dwelling, with the primary aim of future-proofing the home to support the client’s evolving needs. The brief centred around the inclusion of a fully accessible ground-floor bathroom, allowing the clients to remain in their home comfortably as they age.

Early in the design process, we undertook a contextual analysis of the surrounding area, identifying a pattern of similar front extensions and porches within the existing streetscape. This informed our approach, ensuring the proposed development would sit harmoniously within its setting and meet local planning expectations.

The extension was carefully designed to include a well-equipped bathroom featuring a shower, WC, and basin, all arranged to prioritise accessibility and ease of use. In addition, the scheme introduced a new entrance lobby—a transitional buffer between the outdoors and the main living spaces. This not only improves the thermal and acoustic performance of the home, but also enhances privacy and day-to-day usability.

Natural light was a key consideration, particularly given the inward-facing nature of the new spaces. Two strategically placed skylights were introduced to bring daylight deep into the plan, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere in both the bathroom and entrance zone.

client’s unique vision.”

Throughout the project, Architecture North Ltd provided full architectural services, from concept design and planning support through to technical detailing. The outcome is a modest yet impactful addition that significantly enhances the functionality, comfort, and longevity of the home. It stands as an example of how targeted, small-scale interventions can deliver lasting value and thoughtful design.
