Plantagenet Street.

This residential extension project, delivered by Architecture North Ltd, involved the design and coordination of a two-storey addition to an existing family home. The aim was to create additional living space to accommodate the evolving needs of a growing family, while ensuring the extension remained sympathetic to the architectural character of the surrounding neighbourhood.

The two-storey extension is deliberately staggered back from the principal elevation, reducing its visual impact from the street and respecting the established rhythm of the surrounding properties. This thoughtful massing approach allowed the design to blend seamlessly into its context, avoiding a dominant or overbearing appearance.

A key part of the brief was to introduce additional bedrooms, easing the demand on the existing layout and providing private, comfortable spaces for family members. On the ground floor, a new bathroom was added to enhance accessibility and future-proof the home for multi-generational living or guests. The internal configuration was reworked to improve spatial flow and functionality, allowing for more efficient use of the overall footprint.

Materiality was carefully considered, with external finishes chosen to complement the original building and neighbouring homes. This ensured that the new extension felt like a natural continuation of the existing streetscape, rather than a contrasting addition. Alongside the architectural works, a new front garden was introduced, softening the relationship between the house and the street while improving kerb appeal and creating a more welcoming entrance.
