PROJECT BIO
This residential project saw the sensitive transformation of a ground floor and lower-level layout to support the client’s changing lifestyle needs, while also making the most of a challenging site. Architecture North Ltd delivered a considered and design-led response that enhanced liveability, increased spatial connectivity, and created a much stronger relationship between the home and its external setting.
A central aspect of the scheme was the introduction of a fully glazed sunroom at lower-ground level. Designed as a light-filled lounge space, this room offers panoramic views over a secluded sunken garden, creating a serene and relaxing environment that feels both open and sheltered. The extensive use of glazing ensures that this space remains connected to nature throughout the seasons, bringing daylight deep into the home.
The project also reimagined the existing basement, converting it into a highly functional utility area. This level is now seamlessly connected to the ground floor via a newly designed side extension. The extension features a single-pitch roof with integrated skylights, allowing natural light to enter previously enclosed areas of the home. This not only improves usability but transforms circulation routes into light and welcoming transitional spaces.
Given the property’s location, the rear garden posed a significant design challenge due to its steep incline. In response, the rear elevation was completely reworked with the introduction of full-width bi-fold doors, which open the internal living spaces onto the garden. This intervention reduces the feeling of enclosure, blurs the boundary between inside and outside, and creates a sense of flow and freedom that counteracts the site's inherent constraints.
“We offer a complete range of services to support you through every stage of your project.”
Internally, the ground floor layout was reconfigured to enhance day-to-day function and comfort, ensuring spaces feel intuitive and accessible. The overall design balances architectural clarity with softness, offering flexibility for the future while supporting present needs.
