This project involved a carefully considered rear and side extension to a traditional semi-detached home, with the aim of unlocking the potential of the ground floor and delivering a flexible, modern living space tailored to the client’s evolving lifestyle. Architecture North Ltd was appointed to provide a full architectural service from concept through to completion, working closely with the client to reimagine the home’s layout and enhance its functionality.

At the heart of the brief was the desire to replace the rigid, compartmentalised layout with a spacious and open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. The new arrangement creates a light-filled social hub for the home—perfectly suited to hosting lively dinner parties as well as relaxed family evenings. Expansive glazed bi-fold doors were incorporated across the rear elevation, connecting the interior with the garden and framing views out across the landscaped outdoor space.

The side extension adds further practical value, introducing a secondary entrance that opens directly to the garden—ideal for returning from countryside walks or dog outings without passing through the main living areas. This thoughtful design feature responds directly to the client’s lifestyle and creates a more dynamic flow through the home.

Internally, the existing middle rooms were repurposed to form a dedicated utility space, allowing appliances to be tucked away from view and reducing noise in the main living areas. A new downstairs WC was also added, improving convenience and enhancing the ground floor layout.
