RIBA Work Stage 1: Preparation and Brief

At Architecture North, we know that every successful project begins with a clear plan. RIBA Work Stage 1: Preparation and Brief is where ideas begin to take shape and the foundation for your project is set. This is the stage where we get to know your needs in detail, ensuring we create a strong framework before design begins.

πŸ“ Defining the Brief

Stage 1 is about translating your aspirations into a structured project plan. Together, we explore:

  • The spaces you need and how they should connect

  • Your vision for style, layout, and materials

  • Practical requirements like accessibility, storage, and sustainability

  • Your project budget and anticipated timescale

Our role is to listen, guide, and refine, making sure your ambitions are achievable while still exciting and inspiring.

🏑 Our Process at Architecture North

Once you formally appoint us, we will arrange a site visit to hold a detailed Project Brief Meeting. This allows us to discuss:

  • Project outcomes and what success looks like

  • Project programme and timeframe so you understand the journey ahead

  • Quality aspirations and design intent

  • Spatial requirements to suit your lifestyle or business needs

  • Project budget source and allocation

  • The wider design team that may be needed to deliver your project

As part of this process, we also undertake a full measured site survey. For more complex sites, where necessary, we outline the need for a topographical survey in your quote to ensure no detail is overlooked.

🌍 Why Stage 1 Matters

Rushing through Stage 1 can lead to problems later. This stage ensures clarity and confidence before moving into design. It saves you time, money, and stress by aligning everyone around the same vision and realistic constraints.

✨ What’s Next?

With your brief agreed and your site information gathered, we move into Stage 2: Concept Design. This is when your project truly comes to life through drawings and ideas that you can see and feel.
